Core Values and their impact on life and business
What are values?
Lets list up some possible answers:
- Values describe what is most important to a person
- Values are the motor that drives, motivates us
- Values are subjective
- Values are often subconscious
- Values can be adopted from other people (typical: parents)
- Values are what’s behind our beliefs
- Values are ranked in a hierarchy
The Value Pyramid
So if values are ranked in some sort hierarchy then the core values are those within the top 10. That hierarchy may be looked at as a value pyramid. The top 1 value may either be on top or the ground layer on which all others are based on.
The top 10 are responsible for the things we do and plan every day.
Where do values come from?
They are nearly imbibed from ones infancy. Most we take in during our childhood years. Family culture, society, tradition and religion feed us with values.
That is why they are so deeply rooted that we usually do not think about them; we are often not even aware that they are there; pushing us to stay or to go, to say yes or no. Values play a dominant role in private as well as business life.
If you tend to give people who made a mistake another chance then humanity and fairness might be the values that make you do so. If violence in real or in a movie makes you angry, if not aggressive then peace and health could be the driving force.
Whether or not you like a person you just met has little to do with that person but lots with yourself or rather your core values. Tricky, isn’t it? The stronger your reaction to a certain situation, the higher the ranking of the value.
Some distinguish between values with an aim (like “money”) and final values. I prefer to work with “final values” because if you look behind “money” then probably its the appreciation / acknowledgment that you are after.
Wouldn’t it be good to know your present core values, be aware of them? You would then know where to look at if your mood changes, frustration or anger rises. I can help you to develop your own value pyramid. Values are part of the levels of intervention which is sort of performance coaching language. Contact me and we build your value pyramid together. Let me assist you.
Your brain makes sure that values that have been trampled on will get attention in one way or the other. People who do not listen to their inner voices and bodies or seek help (e.g. from a coach) run the risk of getting sick eventually. Something might drop off the value pyramid and do some damage.
